Description:

THOMAS A. EDISON
(1847 - 1931) American inventor of the electric light, phonograph, typewriter, and microphone, to name a few. Considered perhaps the greatest inventor of the century. Revealing content A.N.S. at the bottom of a T.L.S. addressed to Edison from an employee requesting a raise, 1p. 4to., [South Orange, NJ], Jan. 26, 1923. The cheeky George W. Perry writes a pointed letter to his boss, in part: "...I have been in your employ since June 1922 at a salary of $30.00 per week, an amount with which I find it exceedingly difficult to pay my living expenses. I wish to ask for an increase in salary. Also I would like to be given work which would require administrative and organizing ability either in connection with manufacturing or sales...if you feel I can best serve you in my present work of testing raw materials and assisting in experimenting for the Powder Blank Department, although I have no training in chemistry, I am glad to continue in this capacity...". At bottom, Edison responds in his typical bold pencil, in full: "Perry I am testing you & will ultimately find a place where you will fit it. I will raise you to $35 for week for the present. Edison". Additionally, Edison dockets the letter at top: "Put on desk". Not particularly known for his gemütlichkeit relationship with his employees, Edison is better credited with his ability to maximize profits by using mass production systems! An interesting glimpse into the great inventor's - and businessman's - mind. Near fine condition.
