Description:

THOMAS A. EDISON
(1847 - 1931) American inventor of the electric light, phonograph, typewriter, and microphone, to name a few. Considered perhaps the greatest inventor of the century. Nice content A.L.S. "Edison" 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but likely early 1920s from his lab in West Orange, NJ], in his typical bold pencil to William T. Perry, in full: "Perry, Give me a list of people used in trucking all over Disc dept. In what dept. employed & what they do - ALL with a view of putting in a system of Conveyors etc. whatever is practicable to do so. The investment being determined by the saving. The investment to be returned from savings in one year. Figure each department separate. Edison". Edison is well-known for his ability to maximize profits by the creation of mass-producing systems, and this letter vividly displays a commitment to that principal. Ironically, his pioneering production model now has negative connotations, and the "down-sizing" of his work force sadly resonates in today's economy! Boldly written, one small chip to margin, else very good condition. From the archive of the addressee, who ultimately resigned in 1923 to take a job managing W.T. Grant department stores.
