Description:

THERESIENSTADT CONCENTRATION CAMP CURRENCY
Good group of three "local currency" notes, designed by and issued to the inmates of the Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. The notes, in denominations of one, five, and fifty Kronen (the currency of Czechoslovakia), each depict Moses holding stone tablets listing the Ten Commandments at left, with the denomination at center and a Star of David over a smaller denomination at bottom right. The obverse also bears the warning: "Anyone who falsifies or imitates this token or puts forged tokens into circulation will be severely punished". The verso of each bill identifies it as a "Quittung"("Token" or "Receipt") for the given denomination, as well as the camp name and the issue date Jan. 1, 1943, and the facsimile signature of the Chief Elder of the Council of Jewish Elders, Jakob Edelstein. The notes were designed by artist and writer Peter Kien, the director of the camp''s Technical Drawing Office, who died in 1944 after being transported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz. Although Kien''s design was approved by the Council and the camp commandant, the head of the Gestapo''s Department for Jewish Affairs, Adolf Eichmann, thought that the depiction of Moses was too "Aryan", and ordered him redesigned to feature a more prominent hooked nose and curly hair. The notes show folds and additional wear from age and use, else very good.
