Description:

THEOPHILOS H. HOLMES
(1804 - 1880) Confederate major general who fought under Lee in the Seven Days, was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department in July 1862, was promoted to lieutenant general, and ended the war with Johnston in the Carolinas. Important war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., "Hd. Qrs", Little Rock, Nov. 4 [1862] to Gen. Thomas C. Hindman whom he had replaced as commander of the newly-formed Trans-Mississippi Department three months prior. In part: "...[Union Gen. Samuel R.] Curtis says in his official dispatch that in driving you to the Ark bottom he accomplished all he intended and that reverse he will go to the Indian country to reestablish the fugitive loyal Indians. There is no doubt the Federals will make a strong effort both in the North West and from the Mississippi. Please organize well before you move...I have sent you about 4,000 arms, that is all I can do...I cannot send you another Divn. until I am certain you cannot do without it...and leave the lower Ark to almost take care of itself. I hope you have taken measures to supercede Gen'l [Gen. Albert] Pike by Gen'l [Gen. John S.] Roane. Somebody must go to the Indian Country who can quiet the Indians as it is necessary for Pike to come here immediately to answer certain allegations...I am unwilling that the Indians should be left without some responsible person's presence to counteract any evil impression he may have made...I shall in a few days probably send you $750,000 out of which I wish you to have the Indians as well as the white troops paid...[Gen. John S. ] Marmaduke has not been appointed...he will continue to act and take rank from my acting appointment. [Gen. Francis A.] Shoup was nominated by the President...[Gen. Braxton] Bragg has gone to Richmond leaving his army near Cumberland Gap under [Gen. Leonidas] Polk...". Last page mounted, else very good to fine. The use of Indians by either side in the conflict often posed problems. Pike trained three Confederate regiments of Indian cavalry, whose loyalty to the Confederacy was variable. After Pea Ridge, Pike was faced with charges that his troops had scalped soldiers in the field. These charges, and others, led to his resignation from the field, flight, and eventual arrest.
