Description:

(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. T.L.S. as Governor of New York, 1p. 4to., Oyster Bay, New York, June 27, 1900, to his friend and advisor Frank C. Travers after being nominated as the Republican Presidential candidate. He describes his intention to continue working with some ‘sound money' Democrats (supporters of the gold standard) amidst the silver vs. gold debate, mentioning his Democratic opponent, William Jennings Bryan. In part: '...You have probably seen that Crimmins is straight out against Bryan. I think we shall hold at any rate a section of the honest Sound Money Democrats who went with us the last time, and this in spite of the snarling of the Evening Post and similar papers...' Minor spotting and light toning throughout, else very good condition. Roosevelt, sharing the ticket with presidential candidate William McKinley, would ascend to the presidency the following September following McKinley's assassination.
