Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858-1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine association T.L.S. as President on Executive Mansion letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 8, 1901, to Dean Sage (1841-1902), noted businessman and major figure in the establishment of Cornell University. Sage was, like Roosevelt, an avid book collector and angler. He wrote Salmon & Trout of The Sportsman's Library, no doubt a favorite of the President. In part: "...First, the proper way for you to address me is as Mr. Roosevelt or Colonel, whichever you happen to like. Let me know about the shoes whenever you feel able to pass judgment upon them. Love to Mrs. Sage...". With an illegible holograph emendation, mounting traces to verso, very good condition.
