Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. ROOSEVELT DEFENDS PRIVATE COMMENTS HE MADE. Great content and association T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., March 30, 1906, to American author and founder of Barnard's College Annie Nathan Meyer (1867-1951) regarding supposed comments he had made. In full: '...I have your letter of the 29th. My public utterances must have been taken as all that I have said on that subject. Nobody has any right, of course, to quote anything that I am alleged to have said in private. I am very much impressed by certain arguments on the subject presented to me by Mrs. Schoff, President of the Mother's Congress...' Creased and lightly toned, else fine. It is likely that the supposed comments Roosevelt made were in reference to women's education. The Mothers' Congress he refers to was founded in 1895. The direct object of the Congress was to make of every household a home by educating mothers and fathers in true parent-hood, by bettering its conditions, multiplying its pleasures, and creating more ideal surroundings for its children. Mrs. Hannah Schoff was a leading advocate of women's rights and of the progressive movement in education. The recipient of the letter, Annie Nathan Meyer, was a well-known advocate for the higher education of women. She believed improvement through education as the first objective to be achieved to change the lives of women, rather than delving into politics. Her sister, Maud Nathan (1862 - 1946) held the opposite beliefs, being a staunch suffragist, and would later be appointed by Roosevelt as the head of the Women's Suffrage committee in his Bull Moose Party.
