THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine content and association T.L.S. 'Theodore Roosevelt' as president on White House letterhead, 1p. sm. 4to., Washington, Nov. 27, 1908 to GONZALO DE QUESADA AROSTEGUI (1868–1915), Cuban founding father, one of the key architects of the Cuban independence movement, along with his great friend Jose Marti, during the late 19th century. In 1900, he became Cuba's Special Commissioner to the United States. In 1901, he was a member of the Constitutional Convention. He entered the diplomatic service and became the Cuban ambassador to the United States. Roosevelt writes, in full: 'My dear Quesada: How would it be possible to present a gift in a more graceful and kindly way? I prize your letter, and I prize the hunting knife from the Canary Islands. Will you present to the former owner my very kind regards, if you ever write to him? I put the inscription in the album of the young ladies, as you desired. With heartiest thanks, and all regard, and above all with the most earnest wishes for the welfare of Cuba, believe me, Sincerely yours, Theodore Roosevelt'. Marginal show through of mounting adhesive, file holes at top, mounted. A fine letter demonstrating Roosevelt's love for both Cuba...and hunting.
