Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine content T.L.S. with holograph corrections and additions on The Roosevelt Hospital letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Mar. 4, 1918 to telegraphy tycoon Clarence Mackay. In part: "...My dear fellow, you have been most kind and I have enjoyed to the full your flowers, and all the other things you sent to the hospital. It was a great comfort to Mrs. Roosevelt to get cables promptly to the boys, over your lines. Believe me, we genuinely appreciate your many kindnesses...". Mackay, building on his father's early start in the industry, had by 1924 stretched 300,000 miles of land lines and 33,800 miles of ocean cables. Of course, Teddy's son Quentin served in France during the war - and would die in combat there four months later.
