Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT, JR.
(1887-1944) American general and son of the president, served with distinction in World Wars I & II, died leading his men ashore at Utah Beach and awarded the Medal of Honor. Good content T.L.S. as Assistant Secretary of the Navy on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 10, 1922 to the chairman of a committee honoring the memory of Monitor designer John Eriscsson. Roosevelt respectfully declines an invitation, adding: "...when I was a little boy I used to rehearse the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac with my Father. I made the Monitor out of a pill-box with matches for guns. The Merrimac was a little more complicated, but a little glue and more cardboard did the trick...Mr. DeLamater and Captain Ericsson rendered a great service...prime importance in saving the Union..." Very good.
