Description:

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. A superb pair of items, the first an A.D.S. 2pp. 8vo., on his Sagamore Hill letterhead, Nov. 20, 1912. Roosevelt pens a recommendation for his chauffeur, in full: "Arthur Merriam has been my chauffeur for over two years. I part with him now only because I am giving up my automobile; if I ever get another automobile I shall do my best to get him back. He is an excellent driver, in country and city; always safe, and ready for any emergency; he keeps his machine in fine order; he is willing, good tempered, sober, trustworthy, and in short a fine class man in every way. I can not speak too highly of him. Theodore Roosevelt". Along with Roosevelt's registration card for his vehicle numbered 24715, filled out in his hand with his name and address on the recto, with information about his card: Type "Touring", make "Haynes Automobile", factory model 2554 from 1910, signed Sept. 30, 1910. This lot also includes Arthur Merriam's 1912 driver's license itself, complete with a photograph of the young man. Roosevelt's D.S. bears one archival tape repair to fold, otherwise very good. His registration card is toned and a bit worn, while Merriam's license - predictably - displays much wear. A fine trio of items.
