Van Kirk writes in pencil, in full: "After sixty years most people d not remember why we dropped the atomic bomb, remember only the large casualties. This is understandable but regrettable (What did most people know about the Civil War in the 1920s). Our education system is a contribution to this lack of knowledge. Now we are in a war of a different type with no well defined enemy. Everyone, civilian or military, is fair game. There is no morality in war of any type and in modern 'war' innocents as well as military get killed. As General Sherman once said, and many agree, 'War Is Hell'. Dutch van Kirk 1/6/06". Opposite this, on the half title page, referring to the book, van Kirk continues in ink: "In my opinion the best account of our mission to drop the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. A bit of wear to the cover, but overall very good condition, and certainly with excellent commentary .
