Description:

THEODOR EICKE
(1892 - 1943) Infamous commander of Dachau, Eicke encouraged his concentration camp staff to live up to their death's head symbol and treat Dachau's prisoners with 'inflexible harshness', fittingly killed on the Eastern Front. Superlative content war-date T.L.S. with indelible pencil, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 11, 1939 to SS-Sturmbannfuhrer [Emil] Lindenbach, commander of the guard detachment at Mauthausen concentration camp. An infuriated Eicke eviscerates Lindenbach for an unspecified act committed against his superior, camp commandant Franz Ziereis (1905-1945). In full: '...To: SS Major Lindenbach, currently in command of the guard detachment, Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Through the Commandant, Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Your behavior towards the commandant at Mauthausen Concentration Camp borders on mutiny and incitement. In 1938, at Dachau, you already came into prominence as a notorious trouble-maker. Your conduct signifies a standing threat to the maintenance of discipline and order. You have no talent for leadership; you possess, however, the capacity to corrupt. I cannot use men of your type at a grave moment such as this. I am herewith discharging you from service in the concentration camps of the home country, and am ordering you to report for duty with the army, so that you can acquire a better understanding of discipline and order. I have informed the commander of Area XXXIV about your conduct...'. Possibly self-typed, with a holograph addition. File and staple holes, else very good. The fate of the unfortunate Lindenbach is unknown, but it would be a safe bet to assume he ended up in a punishment battalion and eventually...dead.
