Description:

THEODOR EICKE REPORT ON CAMP COMMANDANT HERMANN BARANOWSKI
THEODOR EICKE (1892 - 1943) Infamous commander of Dachau, Eicke encouraged his concentration camp staff to live up to their death's head symbol and treated Dachau's prisoners with 'inflexible harshness'. He was fittingly killed on the Eastern Front. Fine association partly-printed typed D.S. signed 'Eicke', 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d., but Feb. 1938 to Sep. 1939]. Eicke completes a personnel report on SS-Standartenfuhrer HERMANN BARANOWSKI (1884-1940), then serving as commandant of Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The report includes biographical details on Baranowski, along with his racial characteristics ('nordic-falian'), administrative skills, and adds a typed addition: '...manages the Sachsenhausen camp with great prudence...Sachsenhausen is currently the biggest K.L...suitable for current position...[also] suitable for other positions...' Marginal file holes, else fine. Baranowski had previously served as commandant of Lichtenburg concentration camp. A sadistic brute, he was known by Jehovah's Witnesses as one who tried to get members of the church to sign statements rejecting their faith, terrorizing them and having them executed in front of their fellow believers. He never missed an opportunity to poke fun of their God. 'I have taken up a fight with Jehovah. We will see who is the stronger, I or Jehovah,' he proclaimed. He died of terrible illness but his daughter claimed that the Jehovah's Witnesses had 'prayed' her father to death.
