Description:

THEODOR EICKE
(1892 - 1943) German military officer, commander of the SS-Division Totenkopf of the Waffen-SS and one of the key figures in the establishment of concentration camps in Nazi Germany. Together with SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer Michael Lippert, Eicke executed SA Chief Ernst Röhm following the "Night of the Long Knives". Early, fine association D.S. "Eicke" in black indelible pencil, 1p. large 4to., Berlin, May 10, 1935, concerning the transfer of SS Untersturmfuhrer Max Schafer. Eicke advises that no transfer can be made as all available positions had been filled, and that "racial terms" were also a consideration. File holes at left, else very good. Schafer would later advance within the SS to the rank of colonel and be awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves for bravery before Leningrad and elsewhere on the Eastern Front.
