Description:

A scarce cast bronze German medal by maker Karl Goetz, 2.25 in. diameter, on one side featuring a caricatured portrait in relief of a black soldier wearing a French helmet at the center of the words 'Die Wacht Am Rhein!! Liberte Egalite Fraternite' ('The Watch on the Rhine. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity') and the year '1920.' The reverse depicts a nude female tied to a phallus that is topped with another French helmet, circled by the words 'Die Schwarze Shande' ('The Black Shame.') Worn with some spots of oxidation, yet overall good. Accompanied by its original box. This medal was one of several issued to protest the stationing of black colonial French troops in the occupied Rhineland after World War I. The reverse side is a scurrilous reference to their purported sexual excesses toward German women. While the reports of these instances were likely exaggerated, they were heavily used for German propaganda purposes.
