Description:

"THE WANDERING JEW"
Broadside, 13" x 16 3/4", hand-colored engraving Le Juif-Errant ("The Wandering Jew"), printed by Gangel and P. Didion, Metz, France, a hand-colored unflattering image of a Jewish merchant asking directions of a Frenchman, bearing a lengthy anti-Semitic poem at bottom. The original tale is from medieval folklore and concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion - he is then cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. Goebbels' propaganda machine used this tale to good effect in their ongoing efforts at Jewish persecution.
