Description:

'THE VENLO INCIDENT'
RICHARD HENRY STEVENS (1893 – 1967) Head of the Passport Control Office (PCO) of the British Secret Intelligence Service in the Netherlands. On Nov. 9, 1939 British Secret Intelligence Service agents were captured five meters from the German border, on the outskirts of the Dutch town of Venlo, following Germany's discovery of their conspiracy in a plot on Hitler's life. The incident was used by the German government to wrongly link Britain to Georg Elser's failed assassination attempt on Hitler at the Burgerbraukeller in Munich a day earlier, and to help justify Germany's invasion of the Netherlands on May 10, 1940. Rare S.P. adding rank as lieutenant colonel, 5 x 9 in. b/w, a candid postwar photo of Stevens meeting with Hitler's photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann. Stevens adds: 'The Venlo Incident 9/ Nov. 1939' beside his signature. Fine.
