Description:

THE USS MAINE
A superb set of six unpublished photographs measuring 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" (matted to 5" x 5") b/w, showing the United States Navy White Squadron when it visited Long Island Sound in 1897. The photos depict the ill-fated USS Maine less than a year before she would be sunk in Havana, thus sparking the Spanish-American War. Other battleships depicted are USS Columbia, New York, Indiana, and Iowa, as well as an image of the fleet leaving the Sound. The photos were taken from a visiting vessel at close distance and bear much detail. In very good condition, with just light wear to mat. Six pieces.
