Description:

THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH
Rare newspaper, The Tombstone Epitaph, 4pp. folio, Tombstone, Cochise Co., Arizona, Jan. 29, 1882. The lead story on the front page concerns the murder of station keeper Otto Boline at the hands of sheep herder John Grass, at Antelope. Grass had come to the station, drank Boline's whiskey, and spit it into the fire. Boline protested, and was ultimately stabbed to death, with Grass fleeing into the surrounding hills. The paper also covers the trial of Garfield assassin Charles Guiteau, with assorted local and national news. There are also plenty of ads for local saloons, restaurants, assayers, and surveyors, as well as ads seeking the return of rustled cattle and horses. A few clean interior repairs, with tiny marginal chips, otherwise very good and a fine example for framing and display. Sold with a disbound copy of Harper's Weekly, 34pp. 8vo., Feb., 1867, bearing a full-page image of JAMES B. "WILD BILL" HICKOK with the first eleven pages of the issue dedicated to an illustrated story of an interview and encounter with Hickok prior to the Civil War. Two pieces.
