THE THELLER MASSACRE
EDWARD R. THELLER (1831-1877) American military officer commissioned with the California Vols., later First Lt., 21st Infy. On June 17, 1877 Theller and his command of 18 men were trapped in a canyon by Nez Perce Indians and wiped out. The battle, known as the Battle of White Bird Canyon, made these soldiers the first victims of the Nez Perce War. D.S. 1p. 8vo., San Francisco, Jan. 23, 1871, Special Order #13 signed by Theller as Second Lieutenant. Fine.
