THE SURRENDER OF U-889 (8)
Lot of seven original photographs from, or concerning, the surrender of the German U-boat U-889 to Canadian naval forces on May 13, 1945. Included are: five 5 x 4 in. b/w aerial photographs of the submarine south of Newfoundland being escorted to port by the Canadian frigate HMCS INCH ARRAN (K6676); a 2.75 x 4.5 in. snapshot of the submarine at anchor offshore at Shelburne, Nova Scotia; an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo of the sub tied to another captured sub alongside at Halifax, July, 1945; and a 6.25 x 5 in. b/w photo of the entire crew about the conning tower. The verso of the image bears a handwritten caption indicating that the photo is a print taken from a negative taken from one of the U-boats crewmen. Eight pcs., very good. U-889 was a was a Type IXC/40 U-boat with a brief career. She was commissioned on 4 August 1944, with Kapitanleutnant Friedrich Braeucker (Crew IV/37) as commander. Until 14 March 1945 she was attached to 4th U-boat Flotilla for training. She was then assigned to 33rd U-boat Flotilla, a combat unit based at Flensburg. Her first, and only, active patrol started on 5 April 1945. She sank no vessels before she was ordered to surrender. On 14 May 1945, U-889 was commissioned into the RCN and decommissioned in December 1945, sunk in 1947.
