Description:

THE SURRENDER OF U-190 (9)
A fine lot of nine items associated with the surrender of the German U-boat U-190 to Canadian naval forces on May 12, 1945 per order of Grossadmiral Karl Donitz. Included is: 11.5 x 4.25 x 3 in. finished wood box with two (loose) hinges at the rear, lined in green felt. The top of the box bears the description expertly painted in gold: 'U=190 Surrendered May 12, 945 Bay Bulls - Nfld.' The top of the box is further decorated with the front part of a German Minesweeper badge, the center cut-out filled in in red paint. The artist and owner are unknown, though we suspect an imprisoned crewmember may have fashioned this for one of his captors. Also included are six original 5 x 3.5 in. b/w photographs of the U-boat as it ties-up at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, and the crew as they disembark from the HMCS VICTORIAVILLE and into captivity. The vessel's master, Oblt.z.S. Hans-Erwin Reith, is shown disembarking with his hand blocking his face, whereas a first lieutenant leaves in dress uniform. The photos, which bears some old tape marks and stains largely to the margins, bear local press stamps to the verso. Also present is an 8 x 5 in. photo image of Reith's surrender on a Canadian Navy form, as well as a rather mocking Canadian newspaper article of an interview of a few crewmen. Overall, very good. U-190 had a surprisingly long career for a U-boat. She was commissioned on Sep. 24, 1942 and undertook six war patrols during which she sank two ships, including the Canadian minesweeper HMCS Esquimalt, sunk on her last patrol.
