Description:

THE SOUTH CAROLINA DELEGATION TO THE TWENTY-NINTH CONGRESS
A fine association A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., Feb. 6, 1845, by ISAAC E. HOLMES (1796-1867), U.S. Representative from South Carolina, recommending a War of 1812 veteran for a position, in part: ‘The Representatives of the U[nited] States from South Carolina recommend the appointment of Lowndes Brown to the office of Surveyor of the port of New York. Mr Brown is a nephew of the late Wm Lowndes [himself a South Carolina congressional representative] of our state, is a gentleman of Education and worth, and qualified to fill even the higher offices of this Government. Having served in the Army during the last war… it is desirable that the favourite nephew of so virtuous and distinguished a Statesman as Wm Lowndes should be suitably provided for by that Government which his uncle in civil & himself in military life so faithfully served...' Holmes signs at the conclusion in black ink, in company with four other members of the South Carolina delegation to the 29th U. S. Congress: ROBERT BARNWELL RHETT (1800-1876) An early advocate of secession, representative for South Carolina to the provisional Confederate Congress and the Confederate House, signing ‘R B Rhett'; JAMES A. BLACK (1793-1848); RICHARD F. SIMPSON (1798-1882); and JOSEPH A. WOODWARD (1806-1885). They are joined by DANIEL E. HUGER (1779-1854), South Carolina's Senator until his resignation the following month. Toned and with folds throughout, with minor splits and chips thereto at the edges, otherwise in very good condition overall.
