Description:

THE SINKING OF THE KAMAKURA MARU
THE SINKING OF THE KAMAKURA MARU A scarce vintage photograph, 5 in. x 3 in. approx. [sight], depicting the M.S. KAMAKURA MARU during her California – Orient service during World War II, loosely housed in a handcrafted, oval ceramic frame with Japanese flag at top and caption at bottom. Overall dimensions are 8 in. x 6 in. Very good condition, not examined out of frame. On April 28, 1943, KAMAKURA MARU was sunk by the U.S.S. GUDGEON while carrying 2,500 soldiers and civilians from Manila to Singapore following several important diplomatic exchanges. The crew of the KAMAKURA MARU failed to send out a distress signal when she was hit; thus Philippine officials did not issue orders to search for her until May 2, 1943, after she passed her estimated time of arrival. Only 28 soldiers out of 176 and 437 passengers out of the 2,500 on board survived the event.
