Description:

'THE SEAMSTRESS OF BUCHENWALD AND RAVENSBRUCK'
A pair of chilling Holocaust relics, including a wooden 'souvenir' box from KL Buchenwald containing largely military-related sewing supplies, straps, etc. and the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp identification card issued to 'Fraulein Daniela Ruter', owner of the sewing box who undoubtedly used it on scene. The solidly constructed wood sewing box, 9.75 x 5.75 x 3.75 in. has a hinged lid decorated with white daisies with worn white lettering reading: 'Zur Andanken auf K.L. Buchenwald 1945' ('In commemoration of K.L. Buchenwald 1945'). Within, the compartmentalized box contains a large quantity of grommets, white thread as well as a smaller quantity of thread in German military hues, several sewing needles, straps, buckles, etc. The box, part of an estate find in Germany, was purchased with its owner's 'Konzentrationslager Ravensbruck' identity card bearing a photograph of the owner, 'Daniela Ruter', stating that she is a member of the camp staff and asking that authorities offer her all courtesies. Finally, included for context is an unrelated letter from a Ravensbruck prisoner, one Maria Adamski, 2pp. 8vo. on official camp letterhead, March, 1943. Prisoner 6723 in Block 4 writes her mother and sister in German with typical content sending thanks for a food parcel, requesting soap, and asking for more letters. Three pieces.
