Description:

THE REVOLUTIONARY DENUNCIATION OF ALEXANDRE DE BEAUHARNAIS
Alexandre Beauharnais (1760 - 1794) French General who served under Rochambeau in the American Revolution and as General in Chief of the Army of the Rhine, also the first husband of Josephine, who went on to marry Napoleon Bonaparte. Later executed by guillotine in the Reign of Terror. Very interesting French Revolutionary manuscript D.S. by JEAN-BAPTISTE ANCAR, 1p. 4to., [Paris], June 12, 1793, regarding the denunciation of Beauharnais. Ancar (?-1794), was ex-commissioner of executive power in Cassel de la Nord, and later employed by the office of the ‘search for emigres'. He was executed on March 24, 1794. He writes, in part: ‘…Ancar, commissioner of executive power, sent by the Army of Avengers [?]…commanded by Custiner [?], passing through Strasbourg, which is publicly known that Beauharnais, temporary commander, instead of being busy with the safety of public affairs, spent his days courting the Lais and his nights giving them balls…Ancar forcefully declares that this man is not fit to hold the dreams of the government so precious…'. On June 13, 1793 and at the behest of Betrand Barere, Beauharnais was elected Minister of War. He was put in command of the Army of the Rhine; however, the Paris Commune was displeased with this appointment and, in the June 15 session, denounced him for being a member of the maligne nobility. Beauharnais was further criticized for his actions defending Mainz during the Siege of 1793, and guillotined the following year. Light soiling to edges, else very good.
