Description:

THE PERSONAL DIARY OF HEINRICH HIMMLER
A superb and one-of-a-kind item, the original pocket diary used by Himmler in 1935, a day-by-day listing of persons he met and where, including Berlin, Munich and the SS center Wawelsburg Castle, and noting frequent meetings with Hitler, Goring, von Ribbentrop, and other high-ranking Nazis. He also records dates of attendance for cabinet meetings, theater and films and participation in SS-related activities such as target practice, fencing, horseback riding, and hunting. The ever image-conscious Himmler makes note of his weight, which plummets from 177 lbs. in April 1935 to 153 lbs. in December, and notes he "calls in sick". This brown leather-bound diary measures 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" and was published by C. Lorenz probably as a promotional item as it contains advertisements for the company. The diary comes with a full German transcription and English translation, with entries reading, in very small part: "...Jan. 27...SS Ski Championship in Garmisch...Jan. 28. Evening at Munich Theatre with the Fuhrer driving...Feb. 5. Discussion with the chiefs of Ministry of Propaganda...Feb. 11...Afternoon with Charli von Oberst...Feb. 16...Sachsenberug Berlin...Feb. 27...Hamburg evening speech to the army...Mar. 11...Berlin. Ribbentrop, Hessen, Dohneb...Mar. 24...Evening Prince of Prussia...Apr. 5...afternoon see Parteitag [film by Leni Riefenstahl]...Apr. 10...morning with Blomberg...Apr. 12...Gauleiter meeting...May 1...May Day festival, long discussion with Hitler...May 7...speech by the Fuhrer...May 21. Ministry. Hitler's speech...June 12...Visit from von Dietrich, Weitzel, Daluege...June 22...Midsummer festival at Fehmarn [Heydrich's home]...July 21...Visit with Schwarz. Bubi birthday. Visit from de Lager English battle fighters...Aug. 24...Full pack march...Nov. 9...Swearing-in ceremony [of SS Gruppenfuhrer officers]...", and more. On Dec. 22, Himmler celebrates the Yuletide on the Brocken in the Harz Mountings, a site fabled in German pagan legend, and concludes the diary with two original sketches: in his customary green ink, he draws a 3-branch star similar to a Maltese Cross - a design for a new medal? Also, a diamond-shaped talismanic parallelogram titled "Spirit, Matter, Strength". Offered together with a candid period photograph (5" x 7", sepia) of Himmler smiling and speaking to an SS officer; a reproduction of a 8" x 10" photo of Himmler and wife at home; and a T.L.S. to Himmler by an unidentified colonel 2pp. 4to., Braunschweig, Aug. 7, 1935 concerning the promotion of a captain. Together, four pieces in very good condition.
