Description:

Period printed document, 9pp. legal folio, Nuremberg, Nov. 9, 1945, a copy used by the French Delegation to the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials of the Aug. 3, 1945 interrogation of WILHELM KEITEL (1882-1946), German field marshal and army chief of staff under Adolf Hitler, later convicted of war crimes and executed at Nuremberg. The German text begins with Keitel offering biographical details about himself and his family, and discussing the destruction of the administration of the Wehrmacht. He continues: "...I could not issue orders...I could only act if Adolf Hitler ordered it...On September 1, 1939 a special Ministry for Defense under the command of Hermann Goring was crated. I became a part of this...I was never appointed a part of the government and did not have a voice in this ministry...I never described myself officially as a member of the [Nazi] party...as far as my heart was concerned, I was a faithful follower of Adolf Hitler, my political views were National Socialist...Even today I remain a convinced follower of Adolf Hitler..." Keitel is also asked about Germany's rearmament, "aggressive warfare", the attack on the USSR, "total war", the Munich Pact, and multiple, lengthy questions concerning the occupation of the Sudetenland. With translation. First pages toned and a bit brittle at the margins, else very good.
