Description:

THE NUREMBERG DEFENDANTS ARE INDICTED
Historic content typed D.S. signed by Col. BURTON C. ANDRUS (1892-1977), commandant of the Nuremberg Prison which housed the accused during the Nuremberg Trials, 1p. 4to., [Nuremberg], Oct. 19, 1945, exactly one month before the trials would commence. OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE INDICTMENT OF THE CHIEF WAR CRIMES DEFENDANTS AT NUREMBERG This is Andrus' official notice to the tribunal of the service of the indictments upon the accused war criminals, effectively launching the most famous military trial of all time. The document lists the 26 principal defendants by name, as well as the exact time at which they were served. Included of course are Robert Ley and Hermann Goring, who would both commit suicide. At bottom, it is interesting to note that Andrus had added: 'von Bohlen, Fritzsche, Raeder and Bormann not yet joined'. Fritzshe and Raeder were of course tried, arms maker Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach would evade trial due to his poor health, and Martin Bormann (already dead), would be tried in absentia. A most historic document! Fine condition. SOLD WITH: a T.L.S. by lead British prosecutor HARTLEY SHAWCROSS (1902-2003), 1p. 4to., [Nuremberg, Nov.14, 1945], refusing to grant an adjournment to JULIUS STREICHER, stating that Streicher's defense had had ample time to reply to the indictment. Andrus' letter above is mounted to heavy stock, and the second page of Shawcross' letter is mounted to the verso of the same piece.
This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
