Description:

THE "NEW YORK HERALD" REPORTS ON THE OPERATIONS AGAINST VICKSBURG AND THE LOSS OF THE MONITOR
Fine Civil War newspaper, the Jan. 8, 1863 edition of "The New York Herald", 8pp. folio, containing reports on a number of interesting and pivotal events. The front page bears the headline "Tremendous Struggle at Vicksburg", and reports on the landing of three infantry divisions under William T. Sherman at Johnson's Plantation on the Yazoo River. These troops then advanced overland to attack Vicksburg, a vital control point on the Mississippi River, but were repulsed by strong Confederate defenses. This action opened the Vicksburg Campaign, which would culminate in the siege and surrender of that city in the summer of 1863. These reports are illustrated with a highly detailed map of Vicksburg and environs, with numerous accounts of the battle from both Union and Confederate sources. These reports occupy almost the entirety of the front page, consigning another important news item to the bottom right corner. This article, entitled "The Monitor Disaster", describes the recovery of a few members of the crew of the revolutionary Union ironclad, which was lost in heavy seas while under tow on Dec. 31, 1862. Additional items describe Union General William Rosecrans' victory at the Battle of Stones River, as well as political news and advertisements. Shows folds, chips, and scattered foxing, with an ownership signature on the front page, else very good.
