Description:

THE "NEW YORK HERALD" REPORTS ON THE IMMINENT BATTLE OF SECESSIONVILLE
Fine Civil War Newspaper, the June 10, 1862 edition of "The New York Herald", 12pp folio, containing reports of a singular event during the conflict, the "Investment of Charleston". This was a Union attempt to capture the city of Charleston, South Carolina, which failed when the Union battalions were defeated by a smaller Confederate force at the Battle of Secessionville on June 16, 1862. This paper reports on the events leading up to the battle, particularly the landing of the Union forces at James Island at the beginning of June. Although the reports mention stiff Confederate resistance, they are confident that the expedition will succeed in capturing the city. The front page of the paper bears an accompanying map of Charleston and environs. The paper also bears extensive reporting on the retreat of Union general Nathaniel Banks in the Shenandoah Valley, under pursuit by Confederate generals "Stonewall" Jackson and Richard Ewell. These reports are likewise accompanied by a detailed map of the region. The paper has been disbound from a compilation, and shows folds and chips, else very good.
