Description:

Fine Civil War newspaper, the May 24, 1862 edition of "The New York Herald", 12pp. folio, containing reports of several interesting events during the course of the conflict, with accompanying maps. The front page bears a diagram depicting the positions of Union and Confederate ships during the May 15, 1862 battle of Drewry's Bluff on the James River in Virginia. The map depicts a defensive line of Confederate ships stretched across the river, as Union ships, led by the ironclads USS MONITOR and USS GALENA, approach. This clash was intended to test the strength of Confederate defenses on the river, and resulted in the withdrawal of the Union ships under heavy fire. Pages 3, 4 and 5 of the paper feature very detailed reports and diagrams of a more pivotal engagement - the May 5, 1862 battle of Williamsburg, the first sizeable clash of Union general George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. This section completely devoted to accounts of the battle describing the movements of various units, with tallies of their killed, wounded and captured. These are accompanied by two large maps showing the disposition of troops at the outset of the battle. The paper has been disbound from a compilation, and shows folds and chips, else very good.
