Description:

THE MEEKER MASSACRE
NATHANIAL MEEKER (1817-1879) American journalist and federal Indian agent, remembered as the most famous victim of the 1879 Meeker Massacre. Meeker, having no knowledge of Indian ways, attempted to force American culture on the Utes who rebelled and killed Meeker and ten others. The Ute War ensued, with much bloodshed on both sides of the conflict. Rare A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Dongola Union[?], May 27, 1861 to naval commander John Rodgers. Meeker, using crude diagrams, describes his proposal to construct what seems to be a human-powered torpedo using rubber-covered fins to propel a cylinder to ram a vessel. He also seeks a $200 advance to construct a prototype. Very good.
