Description:

"THE KOURIER" MAGAZINE
Good pair of issues of "The Kourier"'', the monthly magazine of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Inc., published in Atlanta, includes: The August 1928 edition of "The Kourier", 32pp. small 4to., containing many articles opposing Democrat Al Smith''s presidential campaign in that year, with titles such as "The Issue: Smith Versus America" (penned by Klan Imperial Wizard Hiram Evans), attacks on his association with New York''s Tammany Hall ("Smith Praises Tammany"), and for his opposition to prohibition ("Al Smith: Crusader for Liquor"). Other items of interest include several political cartoons gleaned from other newspapers, many depicting Tammany Hall as a Democratic Party-devouring tiger, as well as an examination of the debauchery of sixteenth-century Pope Alexander VI, a sidebar on the "Japanese Problem", and on the final page, an advertisement soliciting subjects for a "Kourier Essay Contest" ("Klansmen Try Your Brains!") WITH: The July 1936 edition of "The Kourier", 22pp. 8vo., featuring a color cover illustration depicting a Klansman clutching an American flag astride a rearing horse, beneath the exhortation "America for Americans". In contrast to the previous issue, this edition of the magazine covers a rather wide array of topics arranged onto broad sections, including "Aliens" ("Hoodwinking the People About Deportation"), "Communism", "Education", "Industry", "Race" ("The Jewish Problem is American", "Socialist Platform Pleases Negroes"), and "Religion". The center section of the issue reprints the text of the Declaration of Independence, while the back cover advertises a Klan "Annual Field Day" to be held at Newburgh, New York. Both issues show folds with minor tears and soiling, else very good. Two pieces.
