Description:

"THE KOURIER MAGAZINE" OF THE KLAN ATTACKS AL SMITH
Typed magazine article, 2pp. 4to., a supplement to the October, 1928 issue of "The Kourier Magazine", a monthly magazine of the Ku Klux Klan, published in Atlanta. The supplement reprints a letter from Klan Imperial Wizard Hiram Wesley Evans, attacking New York Governor and 1928 Democratic presidential candidate AL SMITH (1873-1944) for his Catholicism and his opposition to Prohibition. In part: "...[Smith] never had a chance to win. He represents minority groups which are hostile to the great body of Americans. There are more Republicans than Democrats in America, are more Drys than Wets. There are more native Americans than Aliens, there are more Protestants than Catholics...Mr. Smith''s strength lies in two things only: his alienism, commingled with Romanism, and his wetness...Mr. Smith knows that he cannot successfully arouse hatred unless he provides some one or some thing to be hated. Naturally he picked the Klan for this purpose, because the Americanism of the Klan is so sharply in contrast with the ideas of the people he is trying to arouse...Mr. Smith will not gain by his new tactics, any more than he gained by the old. The Klan will not let him use it as a stalking horse; we will not raise the religious issue. The American people will know how properly to fix the blame for the stirring up of prejudice and hatred; will know also how to rebuke it..." The letter bears Evans'' signature in facsimile at the conclusion. Smith lost this election badly to Republican Herbert Hoover, partially as a result of the general prosperity of the country under previous Republican presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, but in large part due to anti-Catholic prejudice. The supplement is framed, and shows folds, with some splitting repaired with cello tape. Very good.
