Description:

THE KILLING OF ADMIRAL YAMAMOTO
Operation Vengeance was the American military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto of the Imperial Japanese Navy on April 18, 1943, during the Solomon Islands campaign in the Pacific Theater. The success of this mission and subsequent death of Yamamoto reportedly damaged the morale of Japanese naval personnel, raised the morale of the Allied forces, and acted as sheer, simple revenge by U.S. leaders who blamed Yamamoto for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Yamamoto's transport aircraft was shot down by Pilot REX BARBER, and his fellow pilots claimed an additional transport and escort aircraft during the assault. Offered here is an S.P., 11 x 8.5 in. b/w, a copy of a wartime photograph showing 14 pilots who participated in the historic mission, signed by REX BARBER at center who adds: '339 Fghr Sqdn'. Additionally signed by 10 other members: BESBY HOLMES (adding: ‘Lt. Col. USAF 339th'); JOHN W. MITCHELL (adding ‘339th FT. SQDN'); LOUIS KITTEL (adding: ‘12th FTRSQ 18th AF'); JULIUS JACOBSON; ROGER J. AMES (adding ‘12th Ftr Squadron 4-18-43'); LAWRENCE GRAEBNER (adding: ‘12th Fighter Squadron Apr. 18, 1943'); DELTON KOERK; and DOUGLAS CANNING (adding: ‘1st Lieut. 339th Fighter Sqdr April 18, 1943'). A fantastic group of signatures!
