Description:

THE HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN REPORTS ON THE DEATH TOLL AT PEARL HARBOR ON DECEMBER 7, 1941
Very rare historic newspaper, the "2nd Extra" edition of the Honolulu "Star-Bulletin", published on the afternoon of Dec. 7, 1941, 8pp. folio, bearing the headlines "Deaths Over 400 on Oahu; Latest Report", "Tokyo Announces 'State of War' With U.S.", "Japanese Raids on Guam, Panama are Reported", and "Oahu Blackout Tonight; Fleet Here Moves Out to Sea". The paper goes on to provide the very first in-depth reports of the composition of the Japanese aerial forces which carried out the attack, as well as initial reports on the number of dead and injured on the island. This includes a list of eight civilians who died from injuries sustained during the raid, including several Japanese-Americans, as well as many more injured civilians. Several photographs of bomb-damaged civilian structures are also included. Interestingly, the only tally of military losses suffered is a note stating that five warships appear to have been destroyed at Pearl Harbor, with no further details offered; such information would be scant in public reports, as it was deemed necessary to downplay American losses for morale purposes. The paper shows small chips to the edges and small tears to the horizontal center fold, else very good. While the famous "1st Extra" edition of the paper, bearing the headline "War! Oahu Bombed by Japanese Planes", was saved in considerable numbers, this later edition is far scarcer.
