Description:

THE HANGING OF AUSCHWITZ COMMANDANT RUDOLF HOSS
RUDOLF HOSS (1901-1947) SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer, twice commandant of Auschwitz where he tested and perfected the processes of gassing and cremation. Nearly a million people were murdered with his full knowledge and approval. Hoss was hanged in 1947 following a trial in Warsaw. Unique and important original photograph of Hoss moments after he was hanged at Auschwitz on April 16, 1947. Although photographs by anyone other than the official photographer were strictly forbidden, this example was taken surreptitiously. Measuring 3 1/8 x 2 1/4 in., the grainy image shows the rather makeshift gallows at center, with the deceased Hoss bound and suspended by a rope beneath the cross tie. The official photographer is visible at left, with officials looking on beyond. Buildings make up the background, while the heads of other viewers, restrained by a fence, can be seen in the foreground. The verso of the photo bears an inscription in Polish apparently identifying the scene and victim. As mentioned above, the image is grainy, likely due to the use of less-than-professional quality photographic equipment, but Hoss' bulky body and tilted head are distinct. There are some minor creases to the photo, one of which has only lightly been retouched. Overall, this historic piece is in very good condition. With additonal copy photos and research material. On April 2, 1947 Hoss was condemned to be hanged by a Warsaw court. On April 16, he was led to a gallows constructed at Auschwitz by German POWs. A prosecutor read out the sentence. The hangman placed the noose on Hoss's neck, and Hoss adjusted it with a movement of his head. When the hangman pulled the stool from under the former commandant, his body struck the trapdoor, which opened, leaving Hoss hanging. The priest began to recite the prayer for the dying. It was 10:08 a.m. A physician pronounced Hoss dead at 10:21. His remains were probably cremated. His execution would be the last such public execution in Poland.
