Description:

"THE GROUND WAS COVERED WITH DEAD AND WOUNDED HUNS"
Excellent content World War I A.L.S on the YMCA''s American Expeditionary Force letterhead, 3pp. 8vo., France, April 1918, from U.S. Amry private George Sime to a Mrs. Edward Henrotin, describing his experiences on the Western Front. Is small part: "... It is warm weather here now and we have discarded the winter cloths, but another winter is coming. We all would like to see it over, but the Yanks will stay to the bitter end. We have met the boshe in battle ''The Kaiser''s best Ulhans and Prussian Guards'' and gave them a bad thrashing. We killed and captured many. Did you ever wonder why the boshe attack in mass formation? Well their yellow, they are afraid unless in a bunch. One American is good for three of them. The ground was covered with dead and wounded Huns. We had casualties, I can not say how many or whom, but you could count them on one hand. The German hate for Americans has turned, they think we are great fighters. In my opinion it looks as if this is the last big German drive. I hope so, it would be better for everybody if it would end..."[all sic] Sime signs at the conclusion in pencil, adding his company and regiment. Sime also transmits a 4" x 3 1/4" sepis snapshot, showing the ruined cathedral of Lens, France, adding the inscription on the verso: "All of Lens looks like this". The original transmittal envelope is also present, as is a 2pp. 12mo. A.L.S. from Simes'' mother, dated Dec. 13, 1918. Shows original mailing folds, with the left edge of the third page ragged, else very good.
