Description:

THE GRAF ZEPPELIN
An interesting pairing: an uncommon A.L.S. by pioneering female aviatrix CLARA ADAMS (1884-1971), the first woman to cross the Atlantic in Oct. 1928 as a passenger aboard the Graf Zeppelin, and also a passenger on the inaugural flight of Pan Am's China Clipper service from San Francisco to Manila. She was also one of only 11 women on the inaugural flight of the Hindenburg on March 4, 1936. The letter, 2pp. 8vo., Biscayne Bay, Mar. 11, 1914, is written to her mother while on vacation with her husband George and reads, in part: "...I do look forward to a letter from you...and like them to be in German...We arrived here last evening...Had refreshment & retired. We all 'slept like tops.' It is simply glorious here in Miami...I have never looked better for months...", with more social content. Along with a fine relic, a 1/2" x 1/3" piece of the aluminized outer fabric of the Graf Zeppelin, removed from a sheet of material given to Clara Adams by Dr. Hugo Eckener in Oct. 1928. Fine condition.
