Description:

(THE FUNERAL OF LORD NELSON)
HORATIO NELSON (1758 - 1805) British naval officer whose brilliant tactics made the British fleet victorious in battles against the French at the Nile and Trafalgar where he was mortally wounded by a sniper. A very rare original invitation to Nelson's funeral at St. Paul's, Jan. 9, 1806. Measuring 4 1/2" x 3", the invitation reads: "Funeral of Lord Nelson St. Paul's, Jan. 9, 1806 Admit the Bearer at the South Door, to the Galleries in the Grave Nave", signed by the Dean. Nelson's state funeral was a lavish affair spanning five days attended by huge crowds gathered to see the burial of a beloved Naval hero in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. With original black-wax seal at bottom right. Very good condition, handsomely matted and presented in a black-and-gilt frame.
