Description:

"THE FUHRER FELL FIGHTING" BROADSIDE
Amsterdam-published pro-German broadside, 1p. folio, the May 2, 1945 edition of "Deutsche Zeitung in de Niederlanden" ("German Newspaper in the Netherlands"), bearing the headline: "Der Fuhrer kampfend gefallen" ("The Fuhrer Fell Fighting"), announcing the death of Adolf Hitler two days previously. The announcement continues, rather over-optimistically: "...Against the main enemy of the German people, Bolshevism - Grand Admiral Doenitz determined by the Fuhrer as Successor - Our soldiers'' love is transferred to Doenitz - The fight is continued..." The broadside goes on to print a statement from Reichkommissar of the Netherlands Artur Seyss-Inquart, encouraging the soldiery to continue to fight for Germany. Naturally, this would all prove to be futile, as the Werhmacht would begin surrender en masse two days later, with the instrument of unconditional surrender being signed by Doenitz on May 8. The broadside shows folds, with pin holes at each corner, else very good.
