Description:

THE FIRST V-1 TO STRIKE ENGLAND
Very rare relic purportedly from a crashed V-1 rocket or 'buzz bomb', a twisted section of steel approx. 22 x 9 in. overall recovered from the first V-1 to strike England. The relic has a white paint stenciled description: 'GERMAN V-1 ROCKET SECTION. GROVE RD BOW. LONDON. 13TH JUNE 1944.' Varnished long ago to prevent any further oxidation. From the personal collection of the decades-long owner of a small British aviation museum. If the attribution is correct, this relic is from the first V-1 flying bomb to strike England, at 4:30 AM on June 13, 1944. It detonated on a London and North Eastern Railway bridge crossing over Grove Street in Bethnal Green. Six persons were killed by the explosion, and twenty-six others were injured. Twelve homes were demolished and at least fifty others badly damaged. Due to lack of provenance, estimated accordingly. From the decades-old collection of the British owner of a small aviation museum.
