Description:

THE FIRST ALLIED PROCLAMATION IN OCCUPIED CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Historic broadside issued by the Allied Expeditionary Force after the liberation of Czechoslovakia, 19.5 x 24 in., published in both Czech and English. Headed 'Proclamation No. 1', the poster bears an inspiring message from Eisenhower to the region's citizens. It reads, in large part: '...Gallant Czechoslovaks, for more than six long years you have suffered, but not lost courage, under the savage yoke of the Nazi oppressors. This unhappy period is now rapidly drawing to a close and the forces under my command are joining with their valiant Russian allies in driving the German Armed Forces forever from the soil of Czechoslovakia. Until all trace of Nazi rule has been eliminated and a stable administration can be set up by your legitimate government, it will fall on me, in the area occupied by my troops, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, to take such steps as are necessary to ensure that the struggle against our common enemy is prosecuted to its final successful conclusion. All persons must continue in the performance of their present duties...and must obey the instructions issued by my Commanders... You have already proved your courage during the trying days of German oppression. I know that I can rely on you to do your part until the victorious conclusion of our common effort. Forward to Victory...' Interestingly, to save paper, this poster was printed on the verso of a June 1944 proof first edition map of the Derval region of France. Clearly a period and displayed example, given the pinholes at each corner. Very good condition, ideal for display.
