Description:

Interesting printed document, 2pp. 4to., [Boston], Jan. 12, 1833, the text of a proclamation made by Massachusetts governor Levi Lincoln, establishing the State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester, better known as Worcester State Hospital, as authorized by a map of the state legislature passed March 24, 1832. In small part: "...Be it further enacted, That so soon as the Hospital shall be prepared for the reception of the Insane... that all such Lunatics shall thereafter be committed to the custody of the Superintendent of the Hospital at Worcester... Now Therefore I, Levi Lincoln, do issue this Proclamation, making public the fact, that the State Lunatic Hospital, at Worcester... is prepared for the reception of the Insane... And I Do Hereby Further Require And Enjoin, that... every such lunatic shall be made perfectly clean, his or her hair cut short, and that he or she shall be clothed with fresh linen or cotton..." The announcement is signed in type by Lincoln at the conclusion. Shows folds, with some splits thereto repaired on the verso with archival tape, and with some chips and toning to the right edge, else very good. The State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester was the first institution for the mentally ill to be established in the state of Massachusetts and remained in operation until its gradual close between 1985 and 2012. It's former buildings stood abandoned for many years before the demolition of all but the iconic clock tower in 2015.
