Description:

THE DEATH OF GEORGE S. PATTON
LUCIUS TRUSCOTT (1895 - 1965) U.S. Army general, commanded the 3rd Infantry Division, VI Corps, Fifteenth Army and Fifth Army. Truscott was conspicuous in the invasion of Sicily and the landings at Anzio. Fine content and association T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Jan. 6, 1945 on ‘Headquarters Third United Army Office of the Commanding General APO 403' letterhead to fellow Gen. Geoffrey Keyes, in part: ‘…I am deeply grateful for your thoughtfulness in sending to me a copy of your General Orders No. 685 announcing the death of General Patton…I am sending herewith a copy of General Orders No. 353…which we published on this same occasion...'. WITH: said copy of General Orders No. 685 which reads, in small part: ‘…The Third Army is deeply grieved at the death of its wartime commander. His overpowering audacity coupled with consummate knowledge of the problems of warfare carried the Army through its first onslaught on the beaches of Normandy and across France and Germany into Czechoslovakia and Austria in 281 days of blinding battle…He gave unstintedly of his strenght [sic], courage and wisdom, and his name will be writ large in the annals of military history…'. File holes at top of letter, otherwise very good condition. Of course Keyes had a very close relationship with Patton as his deputy commander in North Africa, commander the Second Corps in Italy, newly-minted commander of the 7th Army, Sept. 1945 and no doubt shared deeply Truscott's grief. A nice pairing.
