Description:

THE DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER
Two original war-time front pages of the Czech newspaper 'Czech Evening Word', announcing the death of Adolf Hitler, published in Prague, May 2, 1945, 1p. small folio (18 x 12 in.), with the headline 'The Leader Has Fallen'. Surrounding a portrait of Hitler, the article reads, in very small part: '…May 1 Leader Adolf Hitler this afternoon fought until his last breath against Bolshevism…On April 30, Grand Admiral Karl Donitz was appointed as his successor… [He] addressed the German people with the following appeal on the radio: 'German men and women…NA leader Adolf Hitler fell. The German people bow in deepest sorrow and respect…His life was in continuous service to Germany…his…fight against the Bolshevik tide served Europe and the whole world…I must continue the struggle with the British and Americans as far and as long as they prevent me from carrying out the struggle…I demand discipline and obedience. He is a coward who now shirks his duty and thereby brings death or enslavement to German women and children. The oath of allegiance you took for the Fuhrer is now transferred to me…'. One page bears a humorous doodle over Hitler's face, giving him a hat, beard and glasses, while the other bears a mathematical calculation in pen at the top left. Together with a complete copy of the same newspaper, 4pp., Prague, June 15, 1945, with articles about 'Churchill and the Foreign Political Situation, 'Are Italy and Yugoslavia Republics?, 'The Prophetic Words of [Czech historian] Franticek Polacky', and much more political news of the day. Very good condition.
