Description:

THE DEADBEAT MAYOR OF TOMBSTONE
JOHN CLUM (1851-1932) Mayor of Tombstone, founder of the Tombstone Epitaph and an Indian Agent. Interesting letter from San Francisco type makers Marder, Luse & Co. to Tombstone banker P. W. Smith, 1p. 8vo., Oct. 4, 1881 seeking his assistance in collecting a debt from Clum, no doubt for type used at the Tombstone Epitaph's offices. In part: "...Will you be kind enough to have the enclosed accounts placed in the hands of a first class attorney...We have regarded Mr. Clum perfectly good all along, and regret that we are obliged now to insist on our pay...We want the money before Jan. 1st...". Check-mark in text , else very good. Marder, Luse & Co. ceased to exist as an independent firm in 1891...the Tombstone Epitaph is still publishing today.
