Description:

(THE COMPROMISE OF 1850)
HENRY D. GILPIN (1801 - 1860) Attorney General and Jacksonian Democrat best known for arguing the Amistad Case against John Quincy Adams. Important A.L.S., 1p. 4to. Washington, Feb. 9, 1849, to fellow Philadelphia jurist and pro-slavery advocate John Meredith Read three weeks before Zachary Taylor would assume the Presidency. In part: "...I send you...a copy of the record in the case of Bayard v. Lombard...I have examined the bill of complaint in New Jersey v. New York...I can give you no political news. Even this is in allegiance till General Taylor arrives - for neither his views of policy nor his leanings to individuals are in the least known. On the slavery question: the South wish to postpone any action till California can come in as a State and the Northern Whigs are not indisposed to this, in order to save embarrassment to General Taylor; for all seem to agree - North and South - that no territorial law can be passed without the Wilmot Proviso explicitly affected...". John Meredith Read, the grandson of the George Read, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, was nominated by John Tyler as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, but his opinions on slavery prevented his confirmation by the Senate. Both Gilpin and Read had the ear of President Zachary Taylor and definitely affected his views regarding Henry Clay's "Compromise of 1850". Fine condition, with the integral address leaf with postal markings and cancellations still attached.
